Growing fast is its own kind of risk – and most founders don't see it coming

When people picture a business in trouble, they picture one that's shrinking. Falling revenue, empty order books, the slow decline.

But some of the most stressful situations I've seen didn't come from businesses going backwards. They came from businesses going forwards, fast.

Here's the line I'd want every founder to sit with: a profitable business can still run out of cash.

It happens because growth inverts your cash flow. You hire ahead of the revenue. You buy the stock, take the bigger premises, fund the work in progress – and you carry all of it while you wait to be paid. The faster you grow, the wider that gap gets. Nearly 80% of Australian SMEs reported significant cash flow strain over the past year, and for the growing ones, the pressure comes not from a lack of demand but from the cost of feeding it.

Then there's the second squeeze, the one that's harder to see coming: the business outgrows the way it's run. Systems that worked at ten staff creak at thirty. The founder who once held the whole operation in their head can't anymore, and starts making calls on instinct because the numbers can't keep pace.

That's the moment growth stops feeling like winning and starts feeling like white-knuckling.

The businesses that scale well aren't the ones that grow slowest. They're the ones that build visibility ahead of the curve rather than behind it: knowing their cash position forward, not backward, under a couple of scenarios; getting senior financial judgement in the room before a full-time CFO is justified; and putting operational structure in place to match the growth rather than chasing it.

That's the thinking behind our AVA360° program – connecting finances, operations and strategy so growth is something you plan for, not something that happens to you.

Because the goal was never just to grow. It was to grow into something that lasts.

If you're scaling, or planning to, it's worth pressure-testing your next 12 months before they arrive rather than after. That's a conversation our team has every week – and one we'll be having in person at The Business Show Australia at ICC Sydney this November. Come find us, or start it sooner.
